A LAW OFFICE WITH DEEP ROOTS IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY
Watkins Law, PLLC is located in one of Charlotte Court House's historic landmarks: Tucker Brothers' Store, a brick commercial building dating to the 1830s.
The building's history has a particularly meaningful connection to Watkins Law. In 1819, Henry Anderson Watkins, the founder's fourth-great grandfather, acquired the town lot on which the store stands. Henry Watkins was a prominent Charlotte County merchant and landowner, and the property remained in his family until his death in 1848. The Watkins family had already been deeply involved in the affairs of Charlotte County for generations, beginning with Henry's father, Colonel Joel Watkins, who settled in the county in the 1780s.
Henry Anderson Watkins was also an accomplished builder. He constructed Woodfork, his family home near Charlotte Court House, in 1829, and has been recognized by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources as a master builder whose work included several of Charlotte County's notable historic homes. It is believed that he built the brick building now occupied by Watkins Law sometime between 1823 and 1835.
Over the course of nearly two centuries, the store has served Charlotte Court House in a variety of capacities and was operated for many years by the Tucker family, giving the building the name by which it is known today. Its preservation and restoration have ensured that this important piece of Charlotte County history remains a part of the community.
Today, Watkins Law carries that history forward from the very community in which the Watkins family has been rooted for generations. For the firm's founder, practicing law in this historic building is more than a matter of location. It represents a connection to family, community, and a longstanding tradition of service to Charlotte County.
The building has witnessed nearly two centuries of the community's history. Today, it serves as the home of Watkins Law, PLLC, where that history provides a fitting backdrop for serving the people, families, and businesses of Southside Virginia.
